Illadelph Halflife, released in 1996, is the third full length album from The Roots. In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source Magazine's 100 Best Rap Albums. The album received various other awards. In 2006 the album was selected as one of Hip-Hop Connection's 100 Best Rap Albums from 1995 to 2005, and is held as one of the best albums by The Roots by many fans.
The album itself is the closest The Roots would get to straight up, simple East Coast hip-hop. Whereas on their first two albums The Roots had a loose, jam session feel to their music, they seemed much more focused on Illadelph Halflife, working hard to give the listener stronger hooks to focus on, one of the main criticisms of the first two albums.

Things Fall Apart is a hip hop album by the Philadelphia based group The Roots, released on February 23, 1999, (see 1999 in music) by Geffen Records. Things Fall Apart is considered to be the group's breakthrough album, and includes the song "You Got Me" which won the group a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The album was also nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album (which was won by Eminem for The Slim Shady LP). The album was critically well received with Rolling Stone, calling it a "top-flight record", and All Music Guide calling it "One of the cornerstone albums of alternative rap."

The album's opening track, "Act Won," contains an excerpt from the Spike Lee film, Mo' Better Blues. The excerpt is from a scene where Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes are discussing the current state of African American music (or culture in general) after a gig. The album takes its title from Chinua Achebe's novel of the same name.

Phrenology (released November 26, 2002) is the sixth album from The Roots. Immediately following the breakthrough success of Things Fall Apart, its release was highly anticipated and highly delayed, as recording took two years. The album includes guest appearances from artists including Nelly Furtado, Cody ChesnuTT, Musiq, Talib Kweli, and Jill Scott. Phrenology did not chart as high as Things Fall Apart, reaching #28 on the Billboard 200 in comparison to Things Fall Apart's eventual peak of #4. However, like The Roots' previous album, Phrenology sold steadily and was eventually certified gold, signifying sales of at least 500,000 units.

The album was named for the discredited pseudoscience of phrenology, the study of head shapes to determine intelligence and character. Phrenology was sometimes used to justify racism in the past.

The Tipping Point (2004)

he Tipping Point (released July 13, 2004) is the seventh album from The Roots. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200, at #2 on the R&B chart and at #71 in the UK. It is arguably the most commercial of all Roots albums with radio-friendly tracks such as "Don't Say Nuthin'". At the same time, The Tipping Point stays true to The Roots style of going deep into a groove for longer than most hip-hop artists; this is evident on the album's hidden track "Din Da Da".
The album is named after the Malcolm Gladwell book of the same name, while the album photo is the mugshot of an 18-year-old Malcolm X before his conversion to Islam in prison. Some later releases of the albums, including the iTunes version replace Malcolm X with a similarly-posed image of Black Thought as seen in on the "Stay Cool" single cover (see below).
Comedian Dave Chappelle is uncredited on the hidden track "The Mic."

Game Theory is the seventh studio album from Philadelphia hip hop group The Roots, their first on Def Jam Records, which like the group's previous label, Geffen Records, is part of the Universal Music Group. It was released on August 29, 2006. The first single, "Don't Feel Right", was released online in May 2006 and is available for free download on the group's MySpace page (link). The album features guest appearances from Peedi Peedi and returning Roots MCs Malik B. and Dice Raw. The album closes with a song titled "Can't Stop This", an eight minute tribute to the late J Dilla.
The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2007 Grammy Awards, but lost to Release Therapy by Ludacris.

Ghosts I-IV (also known as Halo 26) is the sixth studio album by Nine Inch Nails and was released on March 2, 2008. It contains 36 instrumental tracks and was recorded in ten weeks of fall 2007. Initially intended to be a five-track EP, the album is presented in the form of four nine-track EPs.
